Stay positive.

Check out How To Change Twitter Password

As you must have noticed, Google has given a new look to their sign up page, this new look doesn’t guarantee an easy process of account recovery.

Although I think Google has brought back the recovery option where you will have to answer a question in order to gain access to reset Google account.

Now, there are different categories of issues that revolve around Gmail password recovery,

Some persons have forgotten their Gmail login password,

Some have forgotten both their Gmail password and security question.

Not having access to your Gmail account simply means not having access to your Emails, and unfortunately, it also means not having access to other platforms like youtube, Google+, Google maps, Google drive, and other useful platforms. Not to worry, In a bit, you’ll learn how to reset Gmail password.

Riding on;

Take this advice seriously;

If your Gmail account is not blocked yet, or maybe you have another Google account without the log in issue, you really should check out this post I wrote an article on securing your Google account;

Following all the details listed in that post will give you an 80% guarantee of retrieving your Google account whenever you get locked out.

Moving on;

I’ll take you on this ride, step by step.

Note: Be careful not to fall into ”the scammers trap” Anyone that promises to unlock your Google account for a fee is not probably but DEFINATELY a FAKE!

There is no phone number that you can call to help you unlock your gmail account.

The first thing I will advise you to do in my guide on how to reset Gmail password is to;

Most people really don’t care about this but it actually saves you from the stress of trying to reset Gmail password. Trust me it is difficult and frustrating when resetting the Gmail password.

So, Like I earlier said, you should try to remember your password. As funny or annoying as this may sound, you should really try to remember your password.

Hey! You set the password, so DIG DEEP……………………………..

This totally works for me;

Most times I get frustrated trying to log in to my numerous online accounts;

And this helps me to remember my password.

Tips I Use For Remembering A Password

  • Calm down, Don’t push yourself, the password is up there in your head somewhere.
  • Cycle through passwords for others accounts.
  • Meditate, Seriously you can’t remember that password if you are too eager and restless.
  • Try out possible passwords you would use. I am no magician but it could be your Name, Age, Date of Birth, or maybe a secret.
  • Ask yourself, ”what password would I probably use”?

If you have tried the steps above and you still can’t remember your Gmail password? or maybe your account was Hijacked?

Then your case is serious, we really need to move on;

Here is the part where you would have to follow attentively;

So I thought, Hey Beejay! Why not make this post fun for your readers! And bada bing, bada boom, I came up with Phases.

You might be wondering:

Well YES, Hey! Don’t judge me just yet.

Note: If you didn’t activate some of these options as recovery options for your Google account you may not see them while trying to activate your account. Google wants to secure accounts at all costs.

If you are unable to prove to Google that you actually own the account that you are trying to reset, they’ll literally pay deaf ears and blind eyes to your reset request.

So, Google did some changes to its platform. If you are like me and you have set up a few recovery options here’s how to reset Gmail password.

Step 1. Go to Gmail.com.

Step 2. Input your email ID.

Step 3. Click on more ways to sign in.

Step 4. Click on forgot password.

After clicking on forgot password, you will be redirected to a page where you will see options to help you with Gmail password recovery.

How To Reset Gmail Password

Phase 1;

  • The first option you would see will ask you to enter the last password you remember. Do this. If you can’t remember the last password you used, click on try another way.

how to reset gmail password

  • You should now see another prompt asking you to confirm the phone number that you added to your Google account. Enter your phone number and click on send.

reset gmail password

  • When you have received the verification code, simply insert the code into the box provided by Google to verify it is you.

Cannot reset your password with a code by text?

You didn’t give Google a phone number for verification?

You lost the number you gave to Google? If you did lose your phone number in an event of a theft, in most countries you can visit your service provider, complain to them and they’ll give you a new sim card with your old number.

If you can’t retrieve your number, then your case is quite serious;

Your next hope would be going to the Google Account Support page, you will be asked some questions for verification purposes.

So, that takes us to phase 2

recover gmail password

Phase 2;

If you added an extra layer of security to your Google account by providing recovery details then you will probably have different options that would help you in resetting your Gmail password.

If you didn’t? Then you probably won’t see this Phase, It might take you to Phase 3 or 4.

So maybe you added a phone verification method to your Google account?

If you did? That’s nice because this gives you an upper hand,

  • Enter your Email address if you are asked to, then click/tap on NEXT.
  • If you are asked to receive the verification code via text(Phase 1), ignore and tap on ”try another way”.
  • You should then see a request asking you if you would want to get a prompt on your device?. (Be sure to have your device handy).

recover google password

  • On your mobile device, you will receive a prompt, Tap on YES, then tap on the number showing on your log in screen.

recover google password

  •  On the next page, Select a strong password, and you are good to go.

This is an awesome way to recover your Gmail account if you forgot your password, but for this phase to work you should have already added your mobile device as a recovery option.

If you did not set your mobile device as a Google Account recovery option, then you would probably see Phase 3 and not phase 2.

Phase 3;

  • You will have to open the Account Support page Again.
  • Enter your Email account and proceed.
  • Skip any Phase that didn’t work for you, You can skip by tapping/clicking on (Try a different question).
  • Enter complete recovery Email. (You must have already added a recovery email address for this to work).

recover google password

  • Tap/click on send and wait for Google’s reply on the recovery Email’s inbox.

Be sure to check the recovery email, If it doesn’t look familiar or you no longer have access to it then you have to read Reset Google Password Phase 4.

If you didn’t give Google a recovery email then your case just got to a whole new level of difficulty;

Seriously, It gets better/worse:

Moving on to the next phase.

Phase 4;

So you checked the recovery Email and it is not familiar? Or you Don’t have access to it again?

Don’t give up just yet;

Before Going ahead with phase 4, you should think!. Your recovery Email could be your Yahoo mail or your friend’s Email account…..

Moving On;

Phase 4 is really difficult.

It is literally a guessing game for some.

  • Enter your Email Address if it prompts you to.
  • Skip previous phases that were not of help until you get to where you see Month and Year.
  • You will have to answer a difficult question ”When did you create this Google account” If you can provide the correct month and year then you have a shot at resetting your Gmail password.

recover google password

If this still doesn’t work for you, then your case is getting to a whole new level of difficult……..

Just so you’d know, I was reading an article somewhere and I Learned that Google no longer creates Security questions and answers, but if your account is old enough you would still have that option.

I sincerely do not know how true this is.

But I do know that another way of resetting your Gmail password is by answering a secret question provided by Google. A question they feel only you would have the answer to.

And that leads us to;

phase 5

Skip the previous phases if they are still not working for you. You still have another shot at retrieving your Google account.

  • Skip previous phases till you get to where you would ”Answer the security question you added to your account“.

All you will have to do afterward is provide the correct answer to the security question you are set.

recover google password

There’s a challenge though. After successfully completing phase 5 you might be redirected to phase 3 where you will need to enter a recovery email address.

I don’t blame Google though. I mean, If someone knew my childhood best friend’s name, the person will have access to my Gmail account.

So, the redirect is not actually a bad idea after all. But it is annoying though.

Forgot your Gmail Password And Secret Question?

If you cannot remember the answer to the secret question you set on Google, I’ll be frank with you, Retrieving your Gmail account will be impossible.

If you are unable to provide Google with correct information that they will use to verify your ownership of the account, then you might just have to start thinking of creating a new Google account.

As sad as it may sound, That’s just the way it is, Google will not bend the rules for you.

Something New

We’re now reviewing the information that you provided about [email protected], and we’ll reply to you soon. You can check the status of your request at any time here.

In the meantime, here are our most common troubleshooting fixes:
Back-up options

If you’re having trouble signing in to web-based Google Services (like Gmail or Calendar) because you can’t get a verification code on your primary phone, try using your back-up options: back-up phone or back-up codes.

Application-specific passwords

If you’re having trouble accessing an application on your mobile device
(like the Gmail app) or an email client (like Outlook and Thunderbird),
you may need to use an application-specific password, instead of your
personal password, when you sign in to them.

Here’s proof

Now, Before this method will work for you, you will need to provide Google with information that will make them believe you are the actual owner of the account.

If you tried to recover your Google account using any of the steps above and you end up seeing this image below.

Then you need to read this long text below.

I know it’s annoying, but I am trying my best to help you.

Gmail Password Recovery Tips

Let’s go over some basic Google Tips to help you recover your Google Account.

  • Go back to the Account recovery page.
  • As you complete the steps, use as many of the tips below as you can.

If you tried to recover your Google account and got the error message “Google couldn’t verify this account belongs to you” there’s no harm in trying again.

  • Answer as many questions as possible

Yeah, I know I told you to click on the try another method link, but if you Google kicks against this. Don’t skip questions, if you are not sure of an answer to a question, you should take your best guess rather than moving on to another question.

  • Use a familiar device & location

If possible:

  • Use a computer, phone, or tablet that you frequently use to sign in.
  • Don’t use differnet browsers, use the same browser (like Chrome or Safari) that you usually use.
  • Be in a location where you usually sign in, like at home, work or school.

  • Be exact with passwords & answers to security questions

Details matter, you definitely do not want to send typos to Google. Take your time, think before sending answers to security questions. Also, pay attention to uppercase and lowercase letters.

If you’re asked for the last password you remember, enter the most recent one you recall.

  • If don’t remember your last password: Use a previous one that you do remember. The more recent it was, the better.
  • If you can’t confidently recall any previous passwords: Take your best guess.

When answering security questions and you don’t remember the answer? take your best guess.

If you know the answer but didn’t recover your account on your first attempt, consider a different variation of the answer. For example, try “NY” instead of “New York” or “Tom” instead of “Thomas”.

Try all the possible variations you can think of.

  • Find out when you created your account

I know it is almost impossible to do this, but you have to try.

If you cannot remember the month and year you created your Google Account, here are some tips to help you find it.

  • Look for a sign-up email. If you don’t have access to the email for the account, look for a welcome message from Google or Gmail. If you can’t, check for a verification email on another account that you used way back.
  • Ask your contacts/friends. If you use Gmail, ask friends and family when they first got an email from your account.
  • Think about related events or purchases. Try to remember if you created your account when you:
    • Had an important life event, like graduating.
    • Bought a new device. Look for any receipts or contracts that could be helpful.

If you still can’t remember the date you created your Google Account after all the steps, then……… Take your best guess.

  • Enter an email connected to your account

If you’re asked to enter an email address you can check now, you should enter the one that you have previously added to your account. Here are some examples:

  • A recovery email address helps you get back in and is where Google will send you security notifications.
  • An alternate email address is one you can use to sign in.
  • A contact email address is where you get information about most Google services you use.

  • Add helpful details

So, on the Google Account recovery page, here’s is the last tip.

If you’re asked why you can’t access your account, include helpful details.

Some examples are:

  • You’re traveling.
  • You get a specific error message.
  • You think your account was compromised because of malware or another reason.
  • You changed your password last week and can’t remember it.

If your description matches the information Google has, the similarity can help your case.

After you must have submitted the correct information to Google, they will review your Gmail recovery request, if it is successful, you should get this message below.

Click on the Get started button and it will direct you to a page where you can enter your new Google password.

Some other tips that might help

  • If you do not have access to the phone number you used to sign up for your Google account, you could try contacting your service provider.
  • If you do not have access to the email you used as your recovery Email when setting up your account, you could try resetting the Password for that Email.

      1. Hey can you please tell me how to access gmail with user information because in my gmail account there was no recovery email or mobile

          1. Hey ADARSH.

            It is almost impossible to access your account without recovery details.

            However, if you used the mobile sign in method, you should be able to get in.

            If you can’t find it. Then you might have to open a new Google account and make sure you add ALL recovery details.

          Thanks for dropping by.

  2. Hey Tabby,

    I created a Gmail account to write a second review for a bad experience that I had with a contractor. Since then, the contractor has made it right. I used my first initial and last name that shows up under the review as my name when I created the account. I want to delete that review, but did not setup a recovery email or phone number. I know what day that I created and the IP address. I have tried everything I can through Google recovery. Can you provide any help?

  3. Hey…I know this post is old but i’ll give it a try. I’ve tried all your steps above. nothing worked. created a new account but it still requests me to put the recovery details initially stored…

    1. Hey MEL. I am sorry that the steps on this article didn’t work for you. If you created a new account I don’t think it should ask you to put in recovery details initially stored.

  4. I have got a phone from a garage sale and it was sing in and reset to a someone Google account and I can’t get into it what do I need to do to get into the phone I just got

    1. If I understand you, you got a phone and someone’s google account is logged in.

      I think you should reset the phone, this will clear all logged in accounts. After doing this, you can log in your own google account on the phone.

  5. How ya doing BEEJAYADOGHE, I have a little problem with getting into my Gmail, Google+, YouTube, Google Play Store & Google Photos app. I changed my password in the middle of June (2 weeks ago) and here’s the catch – I wrote my passwords down to my original email address & the new password to my recovery email address to verify account so I’ve been through hours doing all of your suggestions before I came to se your ideas, however I do also have a recovery phone number to my Gmail account & that number was to a SIM card on a backup mobile phone & I no longer have access to that phone bcus it was destroyed. Lucky me I has a recovery email added to my original account but I can not login/sign in with my password I have written down so with that said is there a way I could get a verification code sent via text or call to a friend’s cell phone ONE TIME ONLY to access my Gmail & other accounts and create new passwords in order to not lose my pictures, contacts & music I’ve downloaded since 2014 when I created my account? By the way I created my original & recovery emails both on December 2014 before the Christmas holidays & that option didn’t work either trying to reset my password & to get in to my accounts, thank you for taking the to see if a friend can be of help besides you.

  6. I have tried the Account Recovery process several times, to no avail, however, every time that I have tried I have not been asked a secret question. I believe I remember being asked to select a series of secret questions and corresponding answers, but when I visit My Account settings/options I don’t see anything about that. I can’t remember my password, I just changed it 2 weeks ago, but I can still access my email through firefox because it was already signed in. But I can’t access any of the settings because you need to verify your password. And now I am locked out of my google chrome browser.

    1. Hello Karry, So sorry for your predicament. I don’t think Google still uses ”secret question” as an option for account recovery. I personally think you should take your time and try to remember your password. Just calm down and think. It will come to you.

  7. Thanks dude I wouldn’t remember my password then I read your article and I went all the phrases and after i did all of em I remembered my password lol.
    Thanks dude

  8. Hello , my id is [email protected] i have forgotten the password and i have not added phone number or added any other account to get the verification code , please help in resetting the password.
    have tried n’ number of times

    1. Hello.

      I checked your Google account and it seems you don’t have the phone number or email recovery options.

      You could try to remember your password or security question. If you can’t, I suggest you open a new Google account and put in all recovery details

  9. I have done everything you said. They send a verification code to my back up email. I enter it. It then goes to a page asking me to leave a message for the Google techocal staff and someone will get back to me in three to five business days. In which they give me the same information as before. They tell me I can recreate my account which is not possible. Everything I have is connected to this account. Do you know if I can upgrade this to a business account and get technical support?

  10. Hi there. Please help retrieve my email. My phone is gone and have a new phone. Iv tried everything to get into my email. U forgot my password. Please inform me via sms on 0834220277. Will really be pleased.

    1. Hmmm, this is weird.

      Give it some time and try again. Make sure you aren’t making any mistakes.

      Alternatively, you can contact your service provider and ask them to help retrieve your old line. This is possible in most countries.

  12. Your comment …helo sir I forget recovery email but I remember my phone number
    but my account not open please help me

  13. My G Mail account has a new phone number. I forgot my password. My old phone number doesn’t work. So I can’t get a text message for a new code. So I can’t change my password. Please help.

    1. Hello Angela.

      Sorry about that.

      Have you tried to recover your old phone number?

      In most countries, when you lose a phone number. You can always retrieve the number by visiting your service provider.

      When your old phone number is recovered, you can receive the reset code from Google.

  14. Hi Beejay. Thanks for the great post.
    I tried to recover my gmail password by entering
    (1) the phone numbers I had in my account (I did not have access to the phones at that moment)
    (2) when the account was created ( I think the date I gave was close but not sure if it was exact)
    (3) an email address that I could check at that moment (it was different than the one in my lost gmail account as I did not recall that).
    After entering the verification code emailed to me, it said “we could not verify this account belongs to you”. I found my phones a few minutes later and tried the password recovery process again. This time, after entering the verification code, it still kept asking me about the account creation date and my recovery email, none of which I knew exactly.
    My question is: Am I locked out of trying the recovery process because I tried a few times already? When can I try again?

    1. Hey HOMAL

      Question is: Am I locked out of trying the recovery process because I tried a few times already?

      Answer: NOPE. you aren’t locked out. You can try again. The recovery option via phone number should be available.

    2. Hello, something very similar to this is happening to me as well. I can’t get into my recovery email because it is disabled and I also get the “we couldn’t verify this account belongs to you” message.

  15. I KNOW my password but I got a new phone and changed my number as well but before doing so I forgot to turn off 2 Step verification. I know my old number and I explained this in the recover acct form thing Google uses. I don’t know what month I set up the acct. I considered just resubmitting request until I went through all the months bit I’m afraid I’ll be permenantly locked out. I tried twice n quit. I know the account is still opened tho and even know the bkup email….which was set with 2 Step verification and the same OLD number. I’ve got yrs worth of memories bkup to photos and all my kids but moments as they grew are on this acct. PLEASE HELP ME

    1. Hello Lynda

      Knowing your old number doesn’t help. You need to have that number active and ready to receive Googles verification code for recovery.

      Try to retrieve your old phone number.

      If you know the backup email (email associated with the account for recovery purpose) you should use it to recover your Gmail account.

  16. I need some help. I can’t get into my gmail account. I forgot my password. I do not have access to the phone # in my gmail account. However, I am logged in through the gmail app on my phone. But not the browser on my phone, so when I go to change the password, I can’t because I have to sign in again. I have gone through the recovery process and it always says gmail can not verify this is your account. Help!

  17. Hello,

    I forgot my gmail password, but all emails are forwarded to another email I can check. Is there any way to reset password using this redirection?

  18. Lost my phone number and password of gmail account so pls tell me how to open my Gmail account pls reply fast it’s very argent

  19. Hey BeeJah,

    Here is a funky scenario I am trying to help my aunt with: She is logged into her Gmail on her iPad. She does not know her Gmail password. The account was set up a few years ago by a former co-worker who is no longer around. My aunt’s recovery email is tied to her former co-worker’s email. We know the month and year the account was set up and a prior password. SO…. when Google asks for either one of these pieces of information, it wants to send an email to the former co-workers email. This is not an option. Ideally, the recovery email should be sent to her actual working gmail account. I need to wipe her iPad but cannot because this is the only please she can see her gmail. Any ideas?

    1. Hello Paul

      When you say the co-worker is no longer around, do you mean deceased?

      If your aunties co-worker is alive, the best option for retrieving her Gmail account would be to contact the former co-worker.

      Knowing the month and year the account was created might not be enough proof for Google to help.

      Thanks for stopping by, let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Please please give me some advice!!!!

    1. Hello Nancy Morris,

      It’s saddening, I know. Sorry about your current predicament.

      If I am not mistaking, you are locked out of your Android device and require your Google login details to unlock your device, but you have forgotten your Google password or don’t know what Google account login information was used.

      So, here’s what you can do.

  26. Hi all,

    today I recovered my email for my Gmail account after an effort of constant 4 months try
    The problem I had faced was – I had a sudden mental fog and was on medication for 6 months, during this I lost touch with my Gmail.
    I had forgotten pwd for recovery email of Gmail in yahoo, and I had not put in my phone number (my mistake).

    how I retrieved it –

    clink on forgot pwd link –
    hit – try another method-

    then I entered the email of a secondary email I had used 2 years back as recovery email.
    This recovery email I had changed 10 months back to another new email.

    I entered the old recovery email I had used 2 years back, This gave me an email with a security code to my old mail address.

    I think the security database considers old email as well, even though I had changed to a new one.
    If that helps you, feel good.

    Last info from my side :
    Link your email with ph numbers, I will be doing this today onwards

    Advice to Google, Yahoo, and other email providers :
    It is better to mandatorily charge few dollars a year and make ur services Paid, it is better than providing free email service with “zero support for password forgot situations “. Paid service will make these email providers more Accountable, With free emails they provide, they are running scotfree in crisis situations during email retrieval.

  28. This is great info now, but doesn’t help me with my old gmail that I really need to login to. I have to recovery email, but not the phone. I’ve gotten the recovery code from my em as il but then it says “we can’t verify you own this account” and makes me go through this whole process with all the same questions again!

  33. Hi Beejay. Great idea including the phases. I think most of us feel like we’re going in circles trying to recover our accounts. This helped make account recovery more systematic and organized. Good job. Thank you.

  34. So, finally, I found the best article to reset my Gmail password. I was searching for this kind of article for so long period of time. The phases are so clear and simple to understand. I followed the same phases as shown in the above article and guess what! it turned out so well and worked out so well. I really want to thank the writer for writing this article. Great work.

    1. Hey Rasu, I am happy this article was able to help you.

      You could help someone else out there by sharing this article.

      Best Regards,

  35. I have this email that is attached to game account of mine. Email cannot be changed so when I received the account, I was also given the email. Password was saved on that device which is now lost/stolen. Currently I have no way of recovering the password because I did not make the email. The only recovery option available is a phone number which is also not mine. FYI I also have no way of contacting the original owner as he deleted any means of contacting him personally; lives in a different country from myself. Anyway to recover or reset password? Seems impossible for me just from my current situation.
    Email [email protected]

    1. Hello Lee, It is impossible to recover you gmail account because you are not the owner of the account. You need to prove to Google that you own/created the account before they let you in. The best way to recover would be to contact the original owner.

      Sorry sbout this.
