1. Click on Tools option. It is located at the top of the Google Docs page.

After clicking on word count, based on what you have written so far, Google docs will show you the numbers of pages, words, characters and characters excluding spaces.

Confused?

Here’s a more descriptive answer.

Pages: This simply refers to the number of pages that your content has. If you where to print what you have on Google docs, you would get a total number of pages that are shown to you.

Words: This simply refers to the number of words that are present in your write up. If you where working as a freelance writer and were asked to do 3000 words, this is a great way to know how many words you have done using Google docs.

Characters: This displays the total number of characters in the whole page including spaces.

Characters Excluding Spaces: This displays the total count of the characters excluding spaces.

How To Check Word Count On Google Docs (Specific Words)

You can use this method to check the word count of a particular paragraph or group of paragraphs.

This really comes in handy when you are writing a word count specific article that requires that you write an Introduction of 400 words or more.

Here’s what to do.

  1. Use your mouse to highlight on the specific text you want to check.
  2. Click on “tools”.
  3. Click on word count.

After doing this, the word count of the text you highlighted will be displayed in the words section.

You don’t need to check word count after every paragraph. There’s a feature that you can use to see your word count in Google Docs as you are writing.

  1. Click on tools.
  2. Click on word count.
  3. Check the box below that says “display word count while typing“.
  4. Click on OK.

And there you have it. An easy way to display the word count as you type in Google Docs.
